Brendan McCarthy - Head of Development, Financing & Distribution

Brendan McCarthy

Brendan McCarthy co-owns with John McDonnell, the Oscar-winning production company Fantastic Films. At Fantastic Films, Brendan oversees the development, financing and distribution of Fantastic Films’ slate and all co-productions activities.

Production credits include the CHERRY TREE, directed by David Keating, which McCarthy also penned, the festival hit THE HALLOW, directed by Corin Hardy, which screened at Sundance (2015) and the multi award-winning LET US PREY, directed by Brian O’Malley and starring Liam Cunningham and Pollyanna McIntosh, all due for release in 2015. Previous titles include, LAST DAYS ON MARS (Dir: Ruairí Robinson- Directors’ Fortnight, 2013), STITCHES (Conor McMahon, 2012) and EK THA TIGER (Dir: Kabir Khan, 2012),

McCarthy has acted as Film Adviser to The Arts Council of Ireland/ An Chomhairle Ealaíon and from 2001-2012 was the Irish delegate to Eurimages, the European co-production fund based at the Council of Europe.

Prior to joining Fantastic Films, McCarthy was Head of Production and Development at Bord Scannán na hÉireann/The Irish Film Board (2001-2005), where he was instrumental in helping to create new production finance initiatives, including the Low Budget Initiative and the Micro Budget Digital/Development Fund.

McCarthy is a graduate of EAVE, ACE, Media Film School and Scale Strategics Marketing. In addition to this McCarthy has also acted as a Board Member of Media Desk Ireland and previously ran his own production company, Blue Light Productions.

McCarthy has written two screenplays to date – the award-winning WAKE WOOD, starring Timothy Spall and Aidan Gillen, produced by Fantastic Films, in partnership with the legendary studio Hammer Films, released in 2011 and THE CHERRY TREE, due for release in 2015.
